George Mason University, established in 1972 and commonly known as "Mason," is a top-ranking educational institution located in Northern Virginia.  Mason has strong research programs that span topic areas such as cancer, climate change, biosciences and information technology. Mason offers a range of undergraduate and graduate degree programs, and has particularly strong programs in public policy, information technology and engineering, economics, visual and performing arts, conflict resolution, healthcare, biotechnology and life sciences.  The university's School of Law has been widely recognized as one of the top law schools in the U.S. 

 

The area where the university's campuses are based, near Washington, D.C., is known as "the technology corridor."  George Mason University has four campuses, which are Fairfax Campus, Arlington Campus, Prince William Campus and Mason in Loudoun.

 

Mason has many innovative study programs such as study abroad programs for anthropology students, astronomy apprenticeships, Capitol Hill internships, and more.  The Mason faculty includes many celebrated scholars and historians, as well as cutting-edge researchers.

 

History

 

The university is named for George Mason, who lived in Fairfax County, Virginia, and was one of the founding fathers of the United States. George Mason drafted the Virginia Declaration of Rights, a model for the first 10 amendments to the U.S. Constitution, or Bill of Rights.

 

Traditions

For good luck, students at George Mason University have a tradition of rubbing the toe of the George Mason statue before an exam.

Student Life

 

George Mason University has one of the largest residential communities in Virginia, and all freshmen are guaranteed on-campus housing.

 

Social activities, student clubs and organizations are plentiful at Mason, and the university hosts 23 fraternities and 14 sororities.

 

Athletics

 

Intercollegiate athletics at George Mason University include basketball, baseball, softball, track and field, Lacrosse, volleyball, soccer, swimming and diving.

George Mason University is comprised of four campuses:

Community Life

 

There are many activities available on campus and in the community to keep Mason students busy, from hot cedar saunas to musical concerts or kickboxing classes. The campuses of Mason boast many arts venues and athletics facilities, and many social and cultural activities.

 

 

The University of Colorado at Boulder is the flagship university of Colorado. It is located in the Rocky Mountain region, and boasts one of the most beautiful university campuses in the U.S. CU-Boulder, as it is commonly known, has been striving toward a goal to become one of the leading public research universities in the nation.  The CU Boulder offers a mix of programs in many disciplines and ranks high in academic achievement and research.  Its faculty includes four Nobel laureates and many other award-winners.

 

The CU-Boulder campus includes its main campus, East campus, and Williams Village.

 

History

 

The University of Colorado at Boulder was established in 1876, the same year as "the Colorado Territory" became a state. The university opened with 44 students and three teachers.

 

Academics

 

The CU-Boulder offers 80 academic majors to undergraduates, 70 academic majors to masters-level students, and 53 areas of emphasis or majors for doctoral students. 

 

Particularly strong programs at CU-Boulder include planetary sciences, biology, physiology, physics, biochemistry, chemistry, engineering, English, business, geography, law, psychology and music.

 

High-achieving students at the undergraduate level may participate in honors programs, 12 residential academic programs with smaller classes, and the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program.  Graduate-level students may participate in programs offered through the Graduate School, Leeds School of Business, and Colorado Law School.

 

The CU-Boulder's academic calendar follows the semester system, with a fall, spring and summer semester.

Student Life

 

CU-Boulder offers housing both on and off-campus.  All students are free to participate in the many clubs, honor societies, and student-sponsored organizations, recreational activities and Greek societies that are available at CU-Boulder.  From snowboarding to swing dancing, there are many ways to meet other students and become involved in student life.

 

CU-Boulder provides many student services and resources to its student body including academic support, counseling services, financial aid, career placement, and more.

 

 

Traditions

 

The mascot of CU-Boulder is a buffalo named "Ralphie," who leads the football team out on the filed at the beginning of every football game.

 

The "Buffaloes" have been the school's athletic symbol since 1934.

 

 

Athletics

 

Athletics are an important part of the college experience at CU-Boulder. In addition to intercollegiate athletics, students are very active in recreational, club and intramural sports.  The "Colorado Buffaloes" (also known as the "Buffs") teams have won championships and top national rankings in several sports, including skiing, cross-country and football.
