The school was the first two year institution in the state and operated out of a high school until it was given a new location in the Memorial University Building. The school was given a new home in downtown Mason City and renamed to its current in 1965 through legislation enacted by the state that created a system of two year colleges. The school was given a permanent home in 1970 where it continues to operate.
