About

Sowela Technical Community College, located in Lake Charles, Louisiana, was established in 1938 and began operations in 1940. Over the years the school has gone through several names reflecting the growing nature of the school. STCC is constantly expanding its educational offerings and updating its facilities. The school serves residents of south western Louisiana, and has grown is scope, offering traditional and distance learning classes.

 

Academics

Sowela Technical Community College offers a variety of programs for transfer or career development. The school is accredited to award certificates, diplomas and associate degrees. Credit transfer to four year institutions is possible for students seeking to continue their education, while technical and vocational programs prepare students for immediate work in their field of study.

Admissions and Financial Aid

Sowela Technical Community College maintains an open enrollment policy. Students wishing to apply should complete the application and submit it along with all pertinent documents (transcripts, test scores). Financial aid is available to eligible students. Students admitted to Sowela will have an easier time determining financial aid status when applying. Students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and obtain a PIN in order to determine their eligibility and awards.

  • The above review is not correct. Any class taken under the umbrella of General Studies is fully transferrable to any Louisiana College or University. It is the "applied" couses that may not transfer. When you recieve a syllabus for the class, it is noted whether or not the class is structured for transfer. There are some programs at SOWELA that are designed to be terminal degrees, Industrial Instrumentation, Elecronics, Process Technology are such examples. A majority of the Computer Networking, Business and Criminal Justice courses are transferrable as well as all Core classes such as English Comp, History, Economics, etc. No one at Sowela has misrepresented the transferrability of any class offered. It is a required portion of the class syllabus to notate whether or not the class is designed for transfer. The Louisiana Board of Regents decides on the transferrablity of any class offered at any university, not the individual campus.
    I personally know Department Heads that have refused to enroll a student because they didn't understand the transferrability of the courses. As they said, if the moron doesn't understand that the A.A.S. degree will not fully transfer to McNeese, we don't want them as a student. Sowela has several programs with 100 percent placement rates, in positions that pay annual salaries in excess of 50K per year. When choosing an educational pathway a person should be their own keeper in dilligently choosing the correct path.

  • If you plan on attending Sowela for 2 years and transferring to a real University with all your credits, think again.

    McNeese State University, also in Lake Charles, is a 4 year college for around the same price per year, as this 2 year technical school.

    Even though they say they will, credits from Sowela rarely transfer to 4 year colleges like McNeese.

    If you are looking for a fair school, that cares about its students and focuses on career advancement, McNeese State is the way to go, not Sowela.
