The University of Oklahoma (OU) Norman Campus is ranked number one among public universities in the nation for its number of National Merit Scholars, and is in the top five public universities in terms of its number of Rhodes Scholars. And, OU is ranked in the top 10 public universities in the nation by the Princeton review for its overall academic excellence and cost for students.

OU boasts a faculty of international stature, with more than 500 endowed faculty professors and chairs. OU has a popular Faculty-in-Residence program, wherein faculty members and their families live in each of the OU residence halls, fostering faculty-student interaction.

The University of Tulsa has several successful research programs, including its genomics, health sciences, nanosciences, weather, education, and applied social research programs. Several new buildings have been constructed to support and develop these and other academic programs at OU's three campuses, including its Norman Campus. The campus is known for its beautifully manicured grounds, with flowers and landscaping, serene park-like settings, fountains and Prairie Gothic architecture.

History

Thanks to a 40-acre campus donated by Oklahoma residents for the University of Oklahoma, the university was founded in 1890. It opened in 1895 with four faculty members and 100 students enrolled.

If students do not find a club that matches their interests, they can register to start their own.  There are diverse communities at OU with wide-ranging interests and backgrounds, so students are likely to find a group that engages them. There are also many local chapters of national fraternities and sororities, with an active Greek Life on campus.

The OU Campus Activities Council (CAC) organizes myriad activities on campus throughout the year. Students are encouraged to get involved in a planning committee for one of these events, or simply to participate and enjoy campus life.

The OU's Fred Jones Museum of Art is a top art museum in the nation, housing excellent art collections for students and the public to enjoy. The Sam Noble Museum of Natural History also has excellent exhibits. The OU Bizzell Memorial Library has many important collections, including a book handwritten by Galileo.

Traditions

The OU school colors are crimson and white.

The nickname for the University of Oklahoma's athletics teams is "Sooners." The term "Sooners" is a historical reference to some of the land "Boomers" or settlers who came to the Oklahoma Territory to make a claim for unassigned, free land in the late 1880s. The area of Norman, Oklahoma was one region of the territory available for claims. One rule to rightfully claim a lot of land stipulated that all participants were to initiate their claim on the same date or at the same time. Those who tried to stake a claim too soon were called "Sooners." Over time, the term "Sooner" also came to mean a person who was progressive, energetic, ambitious, and prosperous - a go-getter.

Athletics

The University of Oklahoma "Sooners" athletics teams compete in many intercollegiate sports, including:

Men's Sports:

  • Baseball
  • Basketball
  • Cross Country
  • Football
  • Golf
  • Gymnastics
