- I attended Phagan's a few years back. I graduated as a fully licensed cosmetologist. This school did a great job as far as teaching you the basics of hair, nails, and esthetics. Of course you can't leave the school knowing everything in the year or so that you attended. You just leave with knowledge and ability of "the basics". You learn a lot more once you are in the field and can really fine tune your art. There is always more to learn. So, as far as the education goes, I would say I am satisfied.
However, the admissions advisor and the staff at the school is a little misleading on what life will be like post-graduation. They made it sound like you would make SO much money. I did not find this to be true. The reality is that you usually walk away from the school with little to no clientele, since the clients are usually there because the services are discounted greatly. You then have to either a)pay $300-$500 monthly for a full time station in an established salon, b)Work for a corporation (for example: JC Penney's, Regis, Supercuts, Great Clips) where you are making minimum wage. Although with these companies there is possibility of commission, you must make a base amount for the company with is difficult to attain right out of school again, without your own base clientele. Or you can c)Work at a salon that doesn't charge space rent, but gives you 40-50% commission on all services provided.
The problem with a)Renting a station: You are already in the hole an average of $400 on the first of the month. You need to make enough money to pay you back for that. You then need to make enough money to cover your own personal bills. This is very difficult when you don't have a solid clientele, and that takes years to build.
Then there is option b) Pretty self explanatory. Who wants to get nearly $30,000 in debt for a minimum wage job.
Option c) Sounds good, right? Wrong. Most places will hire as many stylists as possible so no one is ever turned away. The owner will have half of everyone's money in their pocket, while you are stuck taking turns (or fighting) with 12 other stylists all wanting their take of the walk ins.
It's a tough business. Especially in Medford where there are literally hundreds of salons, and two schools spitting out 6-12 graduates a month.

- Phagans is awesome i have been there so many times to get my nails done they are awesome. I would suggest them to anyone who wanted to get there nails done.
