The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) is a large, multicultural public research university. UTEP boasts a majority Hispanic student population, and is proud of its multicultural heritage and historical location. UTEP offers 75 bachelor’s degrees, 78 master’s degrees and 19 doctoral degrees. Many service learning opportunities are available at UTEP, which help the community and give students practical work experience.

The Simulation Center at UTEP offers innovative learning experiences to health services students, allowing them to practice in a safe, clinical environment that mimic’s real-world experience. The Medical Professions Institute at UTEP is highly ranked, providing mentoring and networking opportunities for students interested in pursuing medical careers.

UTEP is on the road to becoming the first national research university serving a divers 21st century demographic, which means it is positioned to offer a range of research opportunities at all levels by 2014. UTEP is currently undergoing enormous development and investment in its research programs to achieve this aim by its Centennial Celebration in 2014.

UTEP has a top Executive MBA program that attracts business managers from both Mexico and the U.S. It supports a digital business community called “Borderzine,” which encourages Latino student journalists to share experiences, perspectives and opinions across borders.

History

UTEP was founded as a small mining school in 1914.  There were 27 students enrolled in the “Texas State School of Mines and Metallurgy.” They rode a streetcar or walked across dusty desert to reach the school that was founded on the site of the old El Paso Military Institute. The name was changed several times as the curriculum developed and enrollment increased, until it became The University of Texas at El Paso.

Academics

The academic calendar for the University of Texas at El Paso follows the semester format, with fall, spring and summer semesters. There is a 4-week “Maymester” in the month of May. The summer semester is divided into two sessions: Summer I, and Summer II. The first summer session begins in early June, and the second summer session begins in early July.
