- As an Alumni, I find that Sterling does not stand up to its roll (and claim) of taking part in the community and standing behind the students. After reading the first review; my impression is that is was written by one of the many Admissions workers that come and go - just like the seasons in northern Vermont.
Student turnover is very high. My freshmen class started at around 40 students… four years later, 15 students graduated - the majority of which being transfer students. I found most classes to be at the high school level, or below. For example; in “Environmental Policy and Law” a student can expect to go over the structure of government, and how a bill is passed with a learning tool know as "School House Rock" (an old video for grade school students). The "Conservation Ecology Department" is a joke. Being a graduate, I find that I lack the science background needed to compete for the advancing job market in the field of study for which I was “Trained”. The programs in Northern Studies and Natural History are also being slowly stepped on, as leading faculty in these areas are few to none, and the majors are only considered self design and thus students can either work with what Sterling has, or seek supplemental education at one of the other colleges in the area (what they leave out, is that the nearest colleges in the area are 45 minutes to an hour away… in IDEAL weather conditions).
"Sterling is a terrific school, but those who are looking for frat houses and massive lecture halls will want to go elsewhere."
To this highly egotistical comment from the other review, I reply - there are few dorms on campus and the majority of students live there. Again, what the reviewer leaves out in their review is remarkable. The “dorms” are incredibly outdated and in a terrible state of disrepair, any sensible person would tell you that these buildings need to be condemned, a fact which EVEN THE STAFF AND FACULTY joke about. Not to mention the terrible infestation of mice, and assorted insects, an infestation that left the husband of a staff member with a terrible ulceration as the result of a spider bite.
But, now that we've talked about the physical aspect of the dorms, let's talk a bit about the social aspect. Any sort of supervision of student life seems to magically vanish after 6pm. Now this could be because the faculty doesn't really care, or it could have something to do with the fact that most of the Student Resident Supervisors, are getting intoxicated and/or doing a whole variety of drugs (which you can purchase right on campus) with the students they are suppose to be supervising. Underage drinking, drug use, and assaults/rape are all overlooked - correction, they are brought up at "All College Meetings" where students are told that “we need to look out for each other and that this sort of behavior isn't what happens in a community environment”. The fact of the matter is this - in the world of Sterling College, Crime is allowed and condoned, while Punishment (like the victims of the crimes) is forgotten. Though, they are right about one thing; “Simpson 3”, the large lecture hall on campus, is not what you would find at most colleges in regards to a large lecture hall. But when you take 40 people and put them into that small room, it's a wonder anyone can learn anything. Not to mention when I took a statistics class in Simpson 3, they couldn't figure out how to fix the heat in the building… Did I mention this was during a Vermont Winter? We all wore winter gear to class, while the professor stood upfront and read from a text book.
If you are studious you will find favoritism among your peers, you will notice only a few work hard for what they desire, while others (that you will probably hear drinking on the porch all night or running onto the farm high as a kite) will skimp along with a B average and a knowing smile and nod from the professors. But once you're there, you're there for good. At one point I tried to transfer out, and I found the faculty reluctant to help, and uncooperative in my choice to transfer.
In the end, I did not stand up for myself and became an alumni from this summer camp they call a college, though I could go on and on with negative comments - I'll stop here. I did meet some of the greatest friends I will ever have, but they are few and far between. Now, the student body at Sterling College are the students more a kin to the weary teens looking for any school with laxed enough admissions requirements that will take them, and allow them to drink, party, and do drugs in a town without caring faculty, staff, or police to stop them. Sounds like a great place to send your kids, doesn't it?
