Frontier Nursing University (FNU) was founded in 1925 by Mary Breckenridge and is licensed by the Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education and accredited by the Commission on Colleges of Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

As an online college, Frontier Nursing University believes in a community-based education where students learn from professionals in their community along with FNU faculty while engaged with their peers in meaningful ways.  The didactic coursework at FNU is designed to provide rigorous academics utilizing web-based courses to help achieve your higher education objectives within the comfort of your home or home office.

Students learning online will be required to leverage approved hospitals, clinics, and preceptors in their community to achieve the hands-on, practical experience required of the degree programs.

FNU offers an array of degree tracks for students that include: Nurse-Midwives (CNM), Family Nurse Practitioners (FNP), Women’s Health Care Nurse Practitioners (WHCNP), Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse, Master of Science in Nursing (MSN), Post Master’s DNP, Post Master’s Certificate, PMC, and Doctor of Nursing Practice.

Frontier Nursing University has gained national acclaim for the following: over 75 years of experience in graduate nursing and midwifery, first family nurse practitioner program in the country, in excess of 4,000 nurse graduates with advanced degrees, oldest and largest continually operating nurse-midwifery education system in the country, and has been nationally ranked in the top 30 higher education institutions in Nurse Practitioner and online graduate Nursing tracks.

FNU is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACSCOC) to award doctorate and master degrees.  The nursing midwifery certificate and master's tracks are accredited by the ACME or Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education.  The DNP, MSN, FNP, and a variety of other degree programs at FNU are accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN).
