International Sports Sciences Association (ISSA)

International Sports Sciences Association (ISSA) is a virtual learning institution in 1998 by Dr. Sal Arria and Dr. Fredrick Hatfield recognized the sports science industry was in need of a greater degree of standardization and credibility.

In 2009, the International Sports Sciences Association became the first fitness organization to earn national accreditation by the Distance Education and Training Council (DEAC) which is federally recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (DOE) and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA).

The ISSA offers students a wide choice of fitness certification programs that include: personal trainer, master trainer, fitness nutrition, group fitness, exercise therapy, senior fitness, youth fitness, strength & conditioning, sports nutrition, and elite trainer.  In addition, the International Sports Sciences Association College of Exercise Science offers an associate’s degree in exercise science.

International Sports Sciences Association also has guided study programs, First Aid, CPR, and AED training.  Also available are continuing education units, known as CEU's, in dozens of areas of concentration.  Examples of CEU's offered by the ISSA include corrective exercise specialist, group fitness specialist, sports nutrition, and client-centered personal training to name a few.

Lastly, there are certificate programs that may be of interest to new and returning students.  Certificates in exercise therapy, youth fitness, and strength & conditioning add extra heft to a resume with added credibility and expertise.

If you are looking to transfer credits into an ISSA program, a specific set of guidelines have been established to help you make sense of the process.  As with all accredited higher education institutions, the transfer credit process is determined by the receiving institution.  The basics of the ISSA credit transfer process include the determination of

  1. The educational quality of the institution where you transfer credits
  2. Content, level, and nature of courses studies & their comparability
  3. Applicability of credits earned towards your academic goals

In addition to various sports-based programs and information about degrees & certificate programs, the school provides a host of other resources.  The school performance fact sheets are incredibly valuable for students considering multiple programs in the field of sports science.  This allows you to quickly assess the efficacy of a program with verified data.
