Glendale Community College

Glendale Community College, located in Glendale, California, was founded in 1927 as Glendale Junior College, serving residents of Glendale, La Crescenta and Tujunga. The school began conducting classes at Glendale Union High School for its first two years.  GCC eventually moved to a the Harvard Plant of the Glendale Union High School District, remaining there until 1937. A new location was completed and the school moved to its new home, in the San Rafael Mountains overlooking the city of Glendale.

During this period of time the Glendale Union High School District was dissolved, replaced by the Glendale Unified School District which maintained the school until 1970, where it became part of the Glendale Junior College District. One year later, the overseeing body's name was changed to Glendale Community College District.

Over the years the school has grown, where the original 25 acres of the permanent home is now over 100 acres, with a large number of buildings facilities in place to assist the over 35,000 students that partake of school programs and services each year.

Academics

Glendale Community College offers a large number of programs resulting in associate degrees or certificates, allowing students to choose a path and program that suits their interests the most. Academic transfer programs assist students in obtaining a bachelor degree by fulfilling the freshman and sophomore years of a four year education, facilitating transfer to a four year institution upon completion, particularly public institutions in the state of California.

Career training programs provide individuals with skills and knowledge necessary to enter the workforce immediately after graduation as professionals. These programs award a certificate or degree signifying that the individual is qualified to obtain an entry level position in his or her field of study and generally take between one and two years to complete.

Continuing education and non-credit courses are also available for individuals who wish to return to school for personal or professional interests. These courses cost less than credit courses and do not necessarily require admission to take.

Admissions and Financial Aid

As an open enrollment institution Glendale Community College admits all students who meet the minimum requirements for acceptance. Students should complete the application for admission, submitting it online or in person, and providing all transcripts and standardized test scores. Students should meet with an academic advisor or counselor to determine which program they wish to enroll in and to make a plan for the student's academic or professional future. Registration is shortly before the start of a semester, with tuition due shortly thereafter.

Financial aid is available in the form of loans, grants, work study programs and scholarships. Individuals in need of financial assistance must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) in order to determine need, eligibility and awards. CalGrants are also available to residents of California, given either for need or academic excellence.

Students may be asked to provide additional financial information prior to the disbursement of funds in order to ensure informational accuracy. Scholarships are given for academic excellence, though external scholarships are available which are awarded for a variety of reasons and each requiring its own application.

Glendale Community College is home to a large number of clubs and organizations dedicated to promoting and developing ideas central to the clubs purpose. Individuals are encouraged to join or visit such clubs in order to explore interests and meet likeminded individuals. Clubs may deal with social issues, academics, cultural development, or simply focus on a given interest.

Such clubs and organizations allow students to form bonds with one another outside of a classroom setting through similar interests. Such bonds are often strong, lasting long after the students have left the school. Students may also petition to form their own club if one does not exist that reflects their interests.
