UPMC Shadyside School of Nursing
1 Seton Hill Drive, Greensburg, PA
The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) offers a wide variety of education and training programs for existing health care professionals as well as for entry level aspirants. Nursing training has been a mainstay of this center since 1884 through the UPMC Shadyside School of Nursing.
The school offers a full-time RN training program lasting 22 months. The program draws on the substantial resources of the UPMC community with more than 20 affiliated hospitals to provide a high level of clinical exposure for nursing students. UPMC Shadyside also offers a part-time nursing program lasting 4 years with evening and weekend classes. The part-time program is a very attractive option for current UPMC staff since an agreement to continue working for UPMC for two years after graduation enables all tuition costs to be paid through a tuition reimbursement program.
As a prerequisite for admission, potential candidates with a high school diploma or GED must pass the PSB (Psychological Services Bureau) Nursing School Aptitude Examination: RN. The exam is a general and vocational education test covering the following subject areas: math, reading comprehension, vocabulary, natural science, vocational adjustment, and spelling. To pass applicants must test in a minimum of the 50th percentile in all subjects.
Financial aid is available through US Department of Education and Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency resources. Upon successful completion of the UPMC Shadyside School of Nursing RN program, credits earned can be applied toward an RN to BSN (Bachelor of Science in Nursing) program through Chatham University. The program is exclusively online in format to allow working nurses to participate.
