About
The University of Texas Brownsville and Texas Southmost College is the result of an academic partnership that took place in 1991 to meet community and area needs regarding post-secondary education. Originally a branch campus of University Texas Pan America, the school was separated and given university status with the University of Texas System. Shortly after its formation the school partnered with Texas Southmost College, a community college in Brownsville that was established in 1926 to expand assist one another in providing educational opportunities to residents of south Texas which had been lacking otherwise. The partnership between the two schools is expected to end some time before 2015 due to vote by the Texas Southmost College school board wishing to return it to a separate institution.

Students in need of financial assistance must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), the resulting student aid report (SAR) from which will be used by the school to identify the student's need, eligibility for programs, and the monetary awards he or she is entitled to. Students may also apply for merit scholarships offered by the school, or for external scholarships provided by private groups or funds and offered for a variety of reasons. Students may be asked to provide additional financial documentation, such as tax returns, prior to the disbursement of funds in order to ensure that the information on the SAR is accurate.
Athletics
The UTB/TSC Scorpions participate in a small number of intercollegiate athletics through National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) in the Red River Athletic Conference. Students who participate in intercollegiate athletics will participate in an atmosphere of healthy competition against rival schools, developing skills and habits, such as discipline, teamwork, and good health, which are applicable to one's academic, professional and personal life. Additionally, students form bonds out of camaraderie, working with one another toward a common goal and experiencing success and failure together.
