Individuals working as court reporters will seek employment through the various courts at the local, county, state and federal levels. Individuals will have to demonstrate competency prior to filling the role, as the need for accurate transcription is the cornerstone of the job. Individuals in this field must be quick, have good hearing, be familiar with the methods used for shorthand typing, and be able to relay previously recorded information quickly to the court. Court reporters must maintain a professional appearance, be on time, and have their equipment in place prior to the start of the days sessions.

The demand for court reporters is high, higher than the actual number of available court reporters. Some states require court reporters to obtain licensure. Licensure requirements will vary between states, often requiring an exam as well a graduation from a certified program. An individual may obtain national certification from National Verbatim Reporters Association, which demonstrates competence and skill in a given area of court reporting and are available  in the following three categories:

 

  • Certified Verbatim Reporter (CVR)
  • Certificate of Merit (CM)
  • Real-Time Verbatim Reporter (RVR)

The average salary for a court reporter is $49,700 per year, with a low of $25,000 per year.
