Program Summary

A program that prepares individuals, under the supervision of physicians or laboratory scientists or technologists, to perform waived testing procedures (Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments of 1988), phlebotomy, and other duties in support of laboratory teams. Includes instruction in clinical procedures, various laboratory tests, laboratory mathematics, computer technology, equipment operation and maintenance, sterilization and safety, communications skills, and interpersonal skills.

What is a Medical Laboratory Assistant?

Medical laboratory assistants are responsible for conducting medical tests under the supervision of professionals, including laboratory technicians, physicians, nurses and scientists. Individuals in this field are responsible for ensuring samples are kept safe and that test are conducted according to guideline established by the laboratory to ensure that results are accurate. Assistant are also responsible for mundane tasks, including preparation, cleanup and sterilization.

Educational Requirements

Education for medical laboratory assistant is typically obtained through programs offered at vocational schools and community colleges, typically taking two years to complete. Individuals may also find employment in this area with a high school diploma, receiving education and training through in-house or on the job methods. Education in this area involves a mix of areas, including clinical and administrative work in order to be able to accomplish a broad number of tasks.
