What is Rhetoric & Composition?

Composition is a field of study focused on the professional field of writing, instruction, and research with an emphasis of writing at the college level.  Rhetoric, on the other hand, is the art if discourse whereby speakers attempt to persuade an audience.  Programs in rhetoric and composition meld rhetorical studies, renaissance rhetoric, composition studies, feminist rhetoric, literary studies, science studies, cultural studies, and technology studies into a degree program.  In most cases, degree holders in rhetoric and composition are writing specialists.  Composition and rhetoric specialists may work for private entities, schools, government agencies, and a variety of businesses.
