The Washington District of Columbia is home to a large number of colleges and universities, particularly when considering the small area covered. Most schools are primarily private, though two federal institutions are located within its borders. The district is bordered by Maryland to the north and Virginia to the south and the east. The district is also the capital of the United States and home to the branches of the federal government, thus providing unique opportunities for political science, economics and law students.

There are currently two public federal institutions within Washington D.C. and one District funded historically black college. Public schools tend to have higher enrollment numbers and lower costs; though federally funded colleges are typically founded with specific goals in mind and provide focused educations to ensure those goals are met. Historically black colleges and universities are a group  of schools throughout the United State’s noted for their roots in providing African American residents higher education opportunities as part of their established goals.

Public institutions include:

Private colleges are found throughout the district and provide various educational opportunities, including graduate level study and specialized curriculums. Private institutions tend to have higher costs than public schools, lower enrollment numbers, and more desirable student to teacher ratios. Many of the schools found in Washington D.C. share history and ties to local workings, particularly in the public sector, or to certain Christian sects as part of their establishment. Many of the schools are notable, particularly graduate institutions, which provide unique opportunities for the politically minded.

Private colleges and universities include:

The area is also home to a number of career colleges and schools that provide specialized education and training in a given field of study and preparing individuals for entry into the workforce. Students will choose from a number of available programs in typically high demand fields. These programs typically take less than a year to complete, result in a  certificate, and have a high cost when compared to similar community college programs. Many of these schools offer career placement assistance upon graduation.
