The state of Idaho is home to a small number of colleges and universities, both public and private. This is due to the relatively low population of the state (40th out of 50 in the United States). The state’s largest city is Boise, which doubles as the state capital. Idaho is bordered by Washington and Oregon to the west, Canada’s British Columbia to the north, Montana and Wyoming to the East, and Nevada and Utah to the south.

Public institutions in the state of Idaho are administered by the Idaho State Board of Education. This includes both two year and four year institutions. There are eight public institutions of higher learning in total, with four being community colleges. Of the four remaining, the oldest is the University of Idaho, which was alone as the states only university from its founding in 1889 to 1963. It is the third largest school in the state in term of enrollment, behind Boise State University and Idaho State University, and is the only institution of higher learning to have a law school. Idaho State University is attempting to start the state’s first medical school, taking the steps necessary to prepare a fully accredited program. The fourth school, Lewis-Clark State College provides more technical and career oriented education.

Four year public institutions in Idaho:

Private four year institutions in the state of Idaho offer either a liberal arts education with a religious foundation, or are in fact religious institutions focusing on theological studies or ministry. Of them, the largest school is Brigham Young University – Idaho, which is operated by the Church of Jesus Christ and the Latter Day Saints and is affiliated with Brigham Young University in Salt Lake City Utah.

Private four year institutions in Idaho:

In addition to the two and four year institutions found in the state of Idaho, there are quite a few for profit career colleges that are located throughout the state. These schools often offer short term educations that quickly prepare individuals for high demand careers. The focus on practical skill development is usually high, and many of the schools offer career placement services for graduates. These schools typically cost more than community colleges and their programs typically take less than a year to complete.
