The state of Minnesota is home to large number of post-secondary institutions both public and private. These school are located throughout the state, with many located in large urban centers capable of supporting large number of students. Private schools may be found in a variety of locations, such as rural or low population areas, independent of such factors as service area or population density. Saint Paul is the Capital of Minnesota and its second largest city. Minneapolis is the largest city in the state, with Rochester and Duluth being the third and fourth respectively.
Minnesota has two public school systems of higher education. The first is the University of Minnesota system which is comprised of five schools located throughout the state. The original campus was founded in 1851 and became an institution of higher learning in 1869. Since its founding the school has grown, becoming a premier research and educational institution in the region.

The Minnesota State Colleges and Universities System is the other public education system in the state, comprised of 24 two year institutions and 7 state universities. Established in 1995, the system is a result of the merging of community, technical and state colleges into what is the fifth largest educational system in the country that combines 2 and 4 year schools. The average cost of tuition is lower than those of private schools in the state, career colleges and the University of Minnesota. Altogether the school serves about 430,000 students, approximately 93,000 of which were distance learners.

Private colleges and universities tend to offer a smaller number of programs, often based in a liberal arts format or a specializing in particular area of study, such as an art school. Private schools tend to have lower enrollment than public schools and tuition costs tend to be higher. Student to teacher ratios are often low allowing for a more personalized education. Certain opportunities are also more prevalent, such as research opportunities, internships, and study abroad programs. Some schools were founded based on principles of a given Christian denomination offering educations that incorporate faith in one’s studies.
