Nebraska is home to a number of public and private institutions located throughout the state. Due to the states relatively low population in relation to its size, resulting in a limited number of schools located primarily in larger more populous areas, such as the state’s capital, Lincoln, and its largest cities Omaha and Bellevue. The state is bordered by Kansas to the south, Colorado to the southwest, Wyoming to the west, South Dakota to the north, Iowa to the east, and Missouri to the southeast. The state is composed mostly of flatland allowing for easy travel throughout the state and to adjoining areas, which is particularly useful for individuals involved in athletics or interested in travel.

Public institutions are governed by three overseeing bodies in Nebraska. The first, the University of Nebraska System was founded in 1869 in Lincoln, and currently maintains four campuses throughout the state. The second is the Nebraska State University System, comprised of three colleges not part of the University of Nebraska System.  The third is the Nebraska Community Colleges Association which is responsible for the operations, funding and maintenance of various community colleges throughout the state. Public institutions tend to have lower tuition costs, particularly for residents of the state as well a higher overall enrollment.

Public Nebraska institutions include:

Private colleges and universities in Nebraska are typically higher in cost than their public school counterparts, have lower overall enrollment, and an excellent student to teacher ratio that allows for a more personalized education. Many private colleges offer a liberal arts education that emphasizes well roundedness and allows students to experience various courses not part of their major. Many private institutions received their starts through a mandate by their given Christina Denomination,   such school continue to adhere to prociicples put forth by that denomination while others simply note that it was part of the school’s history.

Private Nebraska Colleges include:

The state is also home to a number of career colleges and schools that offer short term, high tuition training in given high demand field. These schools are located throughout the state and often have very few program offerings or specialize in a given area of study. Similar programs are available through community college, often resulting a in a certificate or degree, with degrees taking up to two years to earn.
