The state of Nevada has a limited number of colleges and universities within its borders due to Nevada’s relatively low population and expansive desert. These institutions are primarily found in more populated areas of the state and provide educational opportunities to their region. Nevada’s largest city is Las Vegas and the capitol is Carson City. The state is bordered by California to the West, Arizona to the south, Utah to the east, and Oregon and Idaho to the north.
Public institutions in the state of Nevada are operated by the Nevada System of Higher Education, which is comprised of two and four year institutions. The system was founded in 1968 and serves about 98,000 students per year. The system is has three four year institutions, four two year institutions and one graduate only institution. Of these schools, University of Nevada, Reno is the oldest by far, having been founded in 1874 and is considered one of the top 500 schools in the world.
Nevada System of Higher Education institutions include:
- University of Nevada (Reno)
- University of Nevada, Las Vegas (Las Vegas)
- Nevada State College (Henderson)
- Desert Research Institute (Reno and Las Vegas)
Community colleges within the NSHE provide career and technical training as well as academic transfer programs for students. Individuals pursuing career or technical training will be qualified to enter the workforce at an entry level position upon graduation. Transfer programs will cover the freshman and sophomore year of a four year education, and will allow transfer to four year institutions to complete a bachelor’s degree.
Nevada’s private institutions are divided between non-profit and for profit colleges and universities. The state has four non-profit schools that provide four year educations, most of which have campuses in other states. These institutions typically have a higher tuition and smaller class size.
Private non-profit schools in Nevada:
- Sierra Nevada College (Incline Village)
- National University (Henderson)
- Touro University Nevada (Henderson)
- Roseman University of Health Sciences (Henderson)
Private for-profit schools and colleges provide short term career and technical training, often in high demand fields. These school offer accelerated programs, often at a higher cost than community colleges, to quickly allow individuals to enter the workforce. Many of these schools offer career placement assistance.
