The state of Oklahoma is home to a large number of colleges and universities. These schools are found throughout the state, primarily in more populous areas. These schools may be public or private, with public institutions receiving state funding in order to maintain their campuses and continue operating. The state’s two largest cities are Oklahoma City and Tulsa. Oklahoma City doubles as the state’s capital. Oklahoma is bordered by Texas to the south, Arkansas and Missouri to the east, Kansas and Colorado to the north, and New Mexico to the west.

Oklahoma has a large number of public institutions. These schools are generally less expensive than their private school counterparts and tend to have larger enrollment, particularly those schools found in large cities. The state also operates several schools on Native American reservations to provide educational opportunities in those areas. Of these schools, the Oklahoma State University System is the largest. The system is comprised of six schools, four of which are general universities, and two of which are focused on health. The system serves over 33,000 students a year.

Private schools in Oklahoma are primarily liberal arts colleges founded by various Christian denominations throughout the state. These schools emphasize various programs and educations, and typically cost more than public schools. Private schools tend to have lower student to teacher ratios and smaller overall enrollment, a result of which is, typically, more academic opportunities in the form of study abroad programs, internships and research projects.
