The American Public University System is an online learning entity comprised of American Public University (APU) and American Military University (AMU).  APUS has academic offices in Charles Town, WV and an administrative center in Manassas, Virginia.

Founded in 1991, The American Public University System offers a number of degree options that include associate’s, bachelor’s, master’s certificate programs and various learning tracks for a broad range of students from corporate professionals to military members to public service professionals.

APUS was created in 1991 by Major James P. Etter as the American Military University.  In 1995, AMU earned a national accreditation through the Accrediting Commission of the Distance Education and Training Council (DETC) then moved to a distance learning institution three years later.
