Guilford Technical Community College, located in Jamestown, North Carolina, founded in 1958 when it was known as Guilford Industrial Education Center, an institution designed to prepare individuals for careers in manufacturing. By 1965 the school was renamed Guilford Technical Institute as a result of being able to grant associate degrees. By 1983 the school was granted approval to add a college transfer program, becoming Guilford Technical Community College. The school originally opened its doors to an enrollment of 50 but has grown over the years to nearly 15,000 students a year. As a result, the school operates several campuses and is dedicated to providing quality services and education to its service area through program development and updated and new facilities perfect for the modern students.
Academics
Guilford Technical Community College offers nearly 100 programs of study that provideĀ academic transfer or career training opportunities, with most programs take between one and two years to complete, resulting in an associate degree or career training certificate. Academic transfer programs fulfill the first two years of a four year education, allowing the student to apply for transfer to a four year institution to pursue the completion of a bachelor's degree by submitting applications to his or her school of choice. Transfer opportunities to public North Carolina institutions are eased through agreements in place with the school facilitating transfer if certain academic requirements are met.
Career training programs provide education and training for a particular field, providing the skills and abilities necessary to perform as a professional in the workplace within that field. Students will participate in practical courses as well as more traditional classroom educations, the mixture of which is dependent upon the student's chosen field, and providing practical experience that is beneficial in the workplace. Upon completion the student's degree or certificate will demonstrate occupational competence and allow for the immediate pursuit of employment. Most programs offered reflect community needs, resulting in more job availability.
