
The Vet Tech Institute of Houston can trace its origins back to 1958 when the original Institute came on the scene as part of the Median School of Allied Health Careers in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. Today there are 6 Vet Tech Institute locations across the country.
The most important prerequisite for admission to the Vet Tech program is an unbounded love of animals. Beyond that, SAT scores and the like are helpful but not essential but all applicants must have a high school diploma or a GED.
In as little as 18 months you can earn an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) in Veterinary Technology degree. The Houston Vet Tech Institute program includes all the educational elements required by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) Committee on Veterinary Technician Education and Activities (CVTEA).
The program includes about 20 formal classes in topics like animal behavior, veterinary laboratory procedures and terminology, veterinary anatomy and physiology, anesthesia and surgical assistance, and so on. The program concludes with a two month externship to gain practical and hands-on experience in animal clinics or hospitals, research facilities, or farm animal veterinary practices. The job placement rate for the 2011/2012 academic year was 88%.
Financial aid is available and student services include housing assistance if needed and full career placement services for current students, graduates, and alumni.
