Hiwassee College, located in Madisonville, Tennessee, grew out of Tullagalla Academy, a boy's school founded by Methodists in 1826. Within 20 years the school had exceeded its capacity, changing locations. The location change also brought about a change of direction, and Hiwassee College was born.
Hiwassee was taken from the Cherokee word “ayuwasi”, meaning the meadow in which the land sinks, reflecting the institution's location in the smoky mountains. Though founded by Methodists, the school is non denominational. Over the Years Hiwassee has offered varying levels of education and degrees, though currently the school only offers associate and bachelor's degrees.
