Strayer University is a private institution that is focused on providing opportunities for working adults to pursue college education in any one of its more than 80 campuses throughout the country. It was founded in 1892 as the Strayer's Business College of Baltimore City in Maryland. While its owner, Strayer Education, Inc. is based in the state of Virginia, the facility in the downtown Washington, DC area stands as the university's flagship campus.
Classes in Strayer are usually scheduled in the evenings and over the weekends as these are the most convenient times for its students, most of whom are employed on a full-time basis, to do the set coursework. Online courses are likewise offered for those who prefer them, provided that all standard admission requirements are fulfilled. Although private colleges are generally more expensive to attend, a number of financing and payment plans as well as military scholarships are available to help mitigate costs.
Programs in one campus may differ from those of other locations. At Strayer in Washington, certificate, associate, undergraduate, and graduate programs are geared towards the fields of Public Administration, Information Systems, Education, Business, Health Services Administration, and Accounting. In ensuring that all its students are well-assisted in various endeavors, the university features a Learning Resource Center (LRC) which includes a comprehensive library as well as academic guidance and tutorial services. The Career Development Center is also in place for those who may need help in reassessing their professional undertakings or wish to pursue new career paths.
