Cayuga Onondaga BOCES – Practical Nursing Program

Nursing is an exciting career with many opportunities. Cayuga Onondaga BOCES-Practical Nursing Program offers an eleven month program to get you started. Students will acquire the skills needed to care for sub-acute and chronically ill clients of all ages. The New York State Education Department, Division of Professional Education Services approves the Practical Nursing program. Upon completion of the program students can take the National Council for Nurses Licensing Examination. Tuition for the program is approximately $9,000.

The program requires 606 hours of classroom instruction and 505 hours of clinical practice. Classes are offered 8:00AM to 3:30PM, Tuesday through Friday. Require courses include Anatomy and Physiology, Nutrition, Microbiology, Pharmacology, Mental Health Nursing, and pediatric nursing. Multiple choice examinations are used to evaluate students. Students are evaluated daily in the clinical setting. Skills learned will increase in difficulty during the duration of the program.

Nurses are currently in high demand. A career in nursing offers flexibility. Some nurses work during the day and some at night. Nurses can also choose to only work on weekends. Many travel possibilities are available for nurses trained in the United States. Nurses interested in traveling can work in Canada, Australia, and English. One year contracts are available that will allow nurses to work abroad.

The program prepares students for a career in nursing. After graduation, students can work in:

  • Home care
  • Community agencies
  • Residences for the disabled
