Overview

Engineering is an area of study and professions that deals with the application of scientific principles in a real world setting. Engineers may work in a variety of fields, utilizing various resources and skills to construct new or more efficient machines, buildings or other constructs as defined by one’s specialization.

Education and Schools

The most common degree pursued by a student seeking an education in engineering is the bachelor degree. Students may also find programs that offer degrees at the associate or master degree level, with graduate level studies often allowing for more specialized education in a sub-field of engineering. Individuals studying in this field will have extensive education in a variety of sciences and mathematics, as well as how engineering theories, techniques and methods may be applied to a given situation.

A curriculum may include:

  • Physics
  • Design
  • Architecture and Structure
  • Computer Modeling
  • Testing and Implementation

Engineering schools are generally rated based on the success of a given department or program. Though undergraduate program tend to have similar education, the advantage of a prestigious program can result in easier access to graduate programs, or potential advantages in employment over similarly educated competitors. Many online resources are readily available for comparison of departments and programs, and their individual strengths and weakness.

Employment Opportunities

Engineers generally work alongside architects in the design and development of buildings, or machines used within them. Engineering can encompass a variety of sub-fields, and utilizes a lot of skill and understanding of physics when applied to construction or other similar projects. As such engineers are important for on site supervision as well as design and development. Job growth should be steady over the next decade, but will require engineers to become more familiar with computerized software, particularly CAD (Computer Aid Design) software, in order to construct designs prior to construction.
