About
Cerro Coso Community College, located in Ridgecrest, California, was founded in 1973 to serve residents within the service area of the Kern Community College District. The school is a public 2 year institution, offering a number of services and opportunities to students and residents through a variety of programs and facilities. The service area is unique, as it separated by desert, valley and mountain, covering over 18,000 miles in four counties in eastern California. The school has been in expansion since its foundation to meet the needs of the its designated service area.

Academics
Cerro Coso Community College offers a variety of programs through a number of departments that result in either a certificate or degree. Such programs allow students to choose the career or academic track that best suits their plans and goals for the future. Students choosing to study in a career program will develop the skills and abilities necessary through a combination of classroom and practical courses that allow for entry into the workforce as professionals. Programs take between one and two years to complete, and graduates may seek employment immediately after graduation. Such are usually reflective of the needs of the community and are often for high demand fields.

Academic transfer programs provide students with a curriculum that completes the freshman and sophomore years of a four year education. Once completed, students will apply for transfer to a four year institution to continue their education and earn their bachelor's degree. Transfer to certain public California institutions is facilitated through agreements with the school, though students may apply to private and out of state schools if they wish. Schools will have varying transfer requirements and guidelines, and as such it is recommended students meet with a counselor to develop a curriculum that best assists in transfer to a student's desired school or schools.

Admissions and Financial Aid
As an open enrollment institution, any student who submits a completed application may enroll at Cerro Coso Community College. Students may be asked to provide transcripts and to take a placement exam. Once completed, new students should participate in student orientation and meet with a counselor to develop a student education plan. Registration for courses takes place prior to the start of each semester, with tuition due ten days after. All students must attend the first day of class or they will be dropped.

Financial aid is available in the form of loans, grants and scholarships. Students in need of financial assistance must obtain a federal PIN and submit a completed Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), the information from which will be used to determine financial need, aid program eligibility, and monetary awards. Students who qualify may also apply for a Board of Governors Grant Fee Waiver, waiving tuition costs if approved. Financial aid must be reapplied for prior to the start of each academic year. Students may be asked to provide additional financial information to ensure that the FAFSA is accurate prior to the disbursement of funds.
